The Kingdom of Light
Before the Kingdom of Light was established, the people lived in superstitious ignorance and constant terror. Dark magics ran wild in the night – strange priests worshiped at the alters of ancient and mysterious Gods, some demanding barbaric and awful sacrifices. Undead monstrosities and sorcerous evils roamed the land, terrorizing honest folk. The five great houses feuded among themselves, bickering over ancient quarrels and fresh enimities. And then came the Lightbringer.
Referred to in the ancient texts as Gloriana, she was the first Queen of the Kingdom of Light. She gathered the great warrior houses under one banner, and one Church, and drove back the wild darkness, bit by bit, carving out an ordered, rational kingdom with a semblance of peace.
That’s the official version, anyway. The truth is, as ever, more complicated. In the times since the first queen, her successors have become ever more corrupt and self serving. Chivalry is the ideal, but many knights are little more than brutes who abuse their privelige and care nothing for the troubles of their people. The Church is a beacon of hope, brotherly love and reason, but can just as easily be a brand of hate and fear. The cities are centres of learning and knowledge, but the farther one gets, the more the superstitions and folk religions of the old ways endure.
